Saturday morning

Saturday morning is one of my favourite time of the week.  Lukas is a late sleeper so I have the house to myself.  It gives me time to tidy up (as much as I want to), catch up on shows Luke usually rolls his eyes through, and enjoy my coffee.  I love being around people and excitement as much as anyone but alone time is something I crave. Saturday morning is the best time for that. I can recharge after a busy work week and get excited about whatever the rest of the weekend has to offer.

Since I have a couple weeks off school it's an especially more enjoyable time! Lately my Saturday mornings have been spent catching up on any school I've slacked on through the week so I'm really taking advantage of them now.  Side note, found out yesterday I passed my post recent course so yay me!

Usually Sully and I get lots of cuddles in on these mornings but it is so beautiful outside he's ditching me to chew sticks!

This guy especially loves nice days. It means he gets the house to himself and doesn't have to be bothered by a stinky dog.

I still can't believe Smudge is going to be five this Christmas Eve! It seems like yesterday we were going to this lady's house that had 13 (ya, 13!) kitties running around but this little chubster ran right over! Who knew that three pound little hairball would turn into this 19 pound fluffball!

Okay time to refill this mug and catch up on PLL.

Christmas Traditions

Christmas traditions are sometimes hard to keep.  They're easier when you're younger and it's just your siblings and parents but now everyone is growing up, getting significant others and having kids.  It's a really weird transition to go from one family of six to essentially five separate families now.  I don't hate it.  I'm so grateful we are all happy, healthy and have found someone we love, but still, it was a hell of a lot easier to organize us all a few years ago!

One of my favourite traditions though is still alive and well, and one I'm so thankful for!  Every year my parents get us each an ornament.  They are usually handmade from a craft fair and always mean something.

This is definitely one of my favourites.  I liked to think that I could of been a superstar someday.  Obviously that didn't pan out...

This one is from the first year Lukas and I lived together just us.  We were celebrating our 5th Christmas together in Souris River.

This wasn't written on but I'm pretty sure it was 2012 too. My mom, sisters and I were lucky enough to spend a weekend in the big apple!

Luke and I have been starting the tradition of giving each other ornaments as well. We exchanged this last year. Apparently we like beverages?

I couldn't NOT include a picture of the Sullster! How sweet is this pose??

Now that I've written this I realize I didn't really take a lot of pictures of the ornaments considering my tree is full of them!  These ones are definitely my favourites though. I could easily go out and buy a bunch of cute Target ornaments but the idea of accumulating them over time is so much better.  It really is the simplest traditions that are the best.

What's your favourite tradition?

DIY wine cork Christmas tree

Happy December!!  I'm kind of having a DIY Christmas this year.  The funds are pretty low but I still want a semi decorated house.  So of course, Pinterest to the rescue.
I found this pin and since my love for wine is a little over the top, I knew I had to try it.

 photo IMG_8399.jpg

Mine definitely don't look as cute as the originals but I am still pretty impressed with how they turned out.  The only thing I would change is the trunk.  I seen a picture of one that used another cork as the trunk which might be a better idea!

Start out by getting together everything you need:
 - corks (duh!)

- glitter

- school glue (or mod podge)

- twine
- toilet paper roll
- hot glue gun

 photo IMG_8388.jpg

I started by putting glitter on all the corks, eight of each colour.
Pro tip: gold glitter would look so nice mixed in here!
Make sure you shake off the excess glue before dipping it in the glitter.

 photo PicMonkeyCollage.jpg

And this is where my blogging skills suck.  I forgot to take pictures of the rest!
Start with the bottom row and glue three corks together.  Make sure you set them on the table as you are gluing them so they lay flat.  Then just keep adding them on top and gluing as you go!  I didn't use new corks so they are a little uneven and some of them have a red tinge but I think that adds to the whole homemade DIY feel of the project.

Overall I'm really happy with how they turned out, now I just need to find a cute star to put on top!

catch up.

I wrote my last final for 2014 yesterday and it feels so good to be done for the year!  I am in the longest process of getting my CPA designation and right now I am in the PREP portion of it.  Basically it is accelerated and condensed university courses that you need to get into the actual CPA PEP course.

I've finished three of the six PREP courses I need and then I start the PEP portion. It seems like such a huge commitment and I seriously question my decision to take it everyday. If you're Canadian though, you might have noticed Friday was the day everyone who is completing the program received their grades. Seeing so many people getting congratulated on Facebook and Twitter was just the kick in the ass I needed.  I have five weeks until I start the next course so I need to remember this feeling!

Finals are exhausting! This right here is EXACTLY how I felt when I finished.  And the three hour nap I took right after proves it.

So, now I get to focus on Christmas the holidays and drinking wine and making plans!
And most importantly getting to spend more time with friends and family.  Especially this little stinker who I am currently trying to make love me!

what's up, buttercup?

guess what...

two of my (beautiful!) best friends got married!

check out the photographers site here.  not only are his pictures amazing, he's a genuinely fun guy to have around on your big day! this is the only one from him yet but I cannot wait until we get the rest!

Luke was the best man so it was pretty great getting to have him around the whole day too!

we even got an epic #EllenSelfie!

people usually say how lucky the guys are to get to just wake up and show up for the wedding whereas girls have to get up early for hair and makeup etc.  honestly, I think that was one of the best parts of the whole day!  getting up at 7:30am wasn't but fun but relaxing all morning (with a delicious mimosa or four) sure made up for it!

seriously, such a fun time, thank you again Ken and Des for including us in your amazing day!!
once we see more pics from the photographer I'll definitely upload them!

Ten on Tuesday

1. I am hating my blog design today.  I used to change it all the time but since I haven't been writing in so long I kind of forgot about it.  Not that I'm back it's hard to look at.  Especially the font.  Do you find it hard to read or is that just me?

2. Have you heard about the shootings in Moncton, NB?  So sad.  Three officers dead from a sick 24 year old.  So unfair.

3. Last week I mentioned exciting things were happening at work and it means a promotion which means a new desk.  If you know me you know how much I love organizing, office/school supplies, and new things.  They ordered my desk today and I honestly CANNOT WAIT to organize my drawers.
Seriously.  What is my life.

4. Prom happened at my old high school last night and it always takes me back to mine.  On a scale of one to ten the actual prom was a negative four but the dance and party were so much fun!  Just goes to show how much more important friends are then boys at that age in your life.

LOVED my dress!

5. I finished the Fault in our Stars.  I have such mixed feelings about it!  I mean I bawled a ton (whilst driving home listening to it so I'm sure lots of people thought I was a nut ball).  The story was well written and I loved the characters but I just kind of feel like it wasn't long enough.  I don't want to spoil it in case you plan on reading it but I wish he had made Gus and Hazel's story longer!  Gah.  Nothing worse than the end of a book when you aren't ready.

6. I'm a lover of any and all stupid jokes.

7. Look at that dogs face!!  He's knows how shitty the joke was but it's already been done!!  Just loving how unamused they both are.

8. My practice on Sunday went really well!  One of the girls asked if I could be the coach more often which is always nice to hear.  I asked the head coach (I always refer to him as 'my coach', not sure if that's weird) and he said I need to work on quicker transitions between drills and some should be timed differently but other then that not a bad job for my first time!  You can tell he's such a dad because he was giving me genuine advice, not wanting to hurt my feelings, but wanted to actually help me because that's what I need.

9. I've started reading The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult who I normally love but three chapters in and I'm finding it hard to stay interested.  Books need to snag me right away or I'm over them.

10. Luke and I are going to Fredericton for the weekend (where we went to university) and I can't believe I am actually saying this but I am really excited to get back over there!  When we lived over there we couldn't wait to get back to PEI.  Sometimes I miss it a bit.

Taking Stock

I sort of love posts like this and since I'm not feeling very creative lately here goes!  ps. this blog where I got the idea is amazing.  holy graphic designer pro.

Making: lemon squares!

Cooking: nachos.  made THE BEST ones the other day.  you have to have homemade guac.  it should just be a necessity with all nachoes.
Drinking: wine spritzers on the weekend and water ever since.
Reading: The Fault in our Stars.  holy. shit.  I am taking a 5 minutes break from reading it to write this post.  IT'S SO GOOD!!

Wanting: to not want those chocolate covered pretzels waiting for me to eat them in the kitchen.
Looking: for new books to read/listen to.  suggestions?
Playing: Sky Burger and Crib.
Wasting: valuable reading time by writing this :)
Sewing: nothing unfortunately.
Wishing: Sully didn't try to eat everything.  always.
Enjoying: this weather!  it's AMAZING lately!
Waiting: for Lukas to call for a drive home.
Liking: maxi dresses and skirts.
Loving: the bridesmaid dress I get to wear in a couple months. it's called a henkaa dress and you should let me know what your favourite way to style one is.

Hoping: I get lots of sleep tonight.

Needing: all the mosqitoes and black flies to fly the hell out of here.
Wearing: sweat pants and the same shirt I wore working out today.  I'm gross.
Noticing: that Sully is being too quiet.  something must be up.
Knowing: I should really take him out but those bugs are SO BAD!
Thinking: really seriously about whether I should go back to school or not in September.
Feeling: lazy and happy.

I took some out but find the original here.

Wine Spritzer

Guess who forgot to blog yesterday!  Yup, you guessed it, this girl.

Ever hear of a wine spritzer?  It has got to be my all time favourite summer beverage.  I absolutely love wine and when you add a carbonated beverage (tonic water) to it, it just gets better!  Throw in a couple slices of lemon and lime and you're set.

Wine Spritzer

Use about half tonic water, half wine, and one slice of a lemon and a lime.
This is also really yummy with frozen strawberries!  Then you get to eat the strawberries after.

So far my favourite type of wine to make this with is Reisling but I have also done it with Pinot Grigio which I also found delicious.  Best part?  For some reason the tonic water ensures I'm not hungover the next morning!  And it's not because I am drinking less wine, it's just something in the tonic water that does it!

Let me know if you try it!

Esky Automatic Cat Food Feeder

Before you think I'm bat shit crazy, yes you read that right.  I bought an automatic cat food feeder for Smudge.

I, without a doubt, think this makes me love Smudge more then ever!  Don't get me wrong, I have always loved Smudge.  I had not loved being woken up at all hours of the night because he was hungry.  Did I mention he's an 18 pound cat?  That means he could likely survive to skip a few meals without worry.

He used to jump up in bed with me, give lots of nice cuddles and then do that oh so cute kneading thing cats love to do.  This is great when it's not three in the morning!!  His favourite way to wake me up?  Slowly, and loudly pushing everything that is on my bed side table off onto the floor.  This included my glass tub of face cream.  That shit is loud.

With the automatic cat feeder I set it for three times throughout the day and I only have to refill it every two -days.  It's perfect.  I set it for 5am so he doesn't wake me up, 1pm when no one is home, and 10pm just before i go to sleep.

I found mine for under $50 on Amazon which is still pricey for a cat food dish but I honestly can't say enough good things about it!  Highly recommend if you have an annoying cat who believes you are on earth to feed him.

The Best Lemon Square Recipe... EVER

Maybe not EVER, but in my opinion they are the bomb.  I can't stop eating them.  I suggest you make these for something so you aren't like me eating four a day.  But if you do eat four, you will love every single one.

I got the recipe from a friend at work so I'm not taking any credit for them.  And from here on out, please call these Kristen's Famous Lemon Squares.  No joke, these bad boys could be famous.

Please keep in mind all of these pictures are taken on a shitty iPhone with shitty lighting.  You want better pictures, feel free to send me a nice camera!

Printable version.

Ingredients:

Crust:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup confectioners sugar, plus more for dusting
Pinch of salt
1 cup of butter, at room temperature

Filling:
4 eggs
2 cups granulated white sugar
6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
6 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350,  Lightly grease a 9 by 13 inch pan (make sure to go up the sides about an inch).

Crust - combine the flour, confectioners sugar, and salt in a large bowl.  Cut in the butter to make a crumbly mixture.  Press the mixture into the greased pan.  Bake for 20 mins.

Filling - while the crust is baking, combine the eggs, sugar, flour and lemon juice.

I absolutely LOVE how yellow it is!

When the crust is done (it won't be completely cooked, but will start to be golden brown on the edges), pour the filling over the crust.  Bake for 25 more minutes.

Sprinkle with confectioners sugar after it has been out of the oven for a few minutes.  Once cooled, cut into squares and enjoy!

If you make these, which you should!  Please let me know!

xoxo, Meg

Ten on Tuesday

1.  It has been far too long since I have done this bad boy.  In fact the last time I would have linked up would have been with the only and only Lin.

2.  I just made lemon squares and they were the bomb.  I want to eat the whole freaking pan.  Recipe will be on the blog tomorrow!

3.  Sully's been annoying tonight and it always makes me so sad when he's being a jerk!  Please stop nipping at my fingers, kbye.

4.  SUPER DUPER exciting things are happening at work!  I don't like to talk about work on here but holy shit batman I'm a happy girl.

5.  I had to buy a PC for school so I gave Luke my Mac.  I fucking hate the amount of popups/ads all over every frigging page.  How do I get rid of them forever!

6.  I caved and spent $40 on self tanner.  There have been a shit load of studies done on the high stats with Islanders getting melanoma and considering I don't tan anyways I figured I might as well try and tint my skin the healthy way.  I went with the St. Tropez tanning mousse.  Will let yas know how that works out *fingers crossed*

7.  I'm meeting my mom and brothers gf at Boston Pizza tomorrow and I can't tell you how excited I am to get a Beef au Jus.  I have no idea why but I have been craving one for months.  Guaranteed I have my hopes up too high and it tastes like shit.

8.  How do we may Sully slow down while eating?  He's hoes into his food like you wouldn't believe.

9.  I'm leading my first practice this Saturday and I did not think I would be this nervous.  I have been the assistant for a ton but I have never led an entire practice myself.  Gotta start somewhere though!

10.  The weather has been amazing this past weekend up until today and I think tomorrow it is supposed to be beautiful too!  I have determined I need more maxi dresses/skirts in my life.  Any good cheap ones around?

Thank you to Alyssa for hosting!

Sully part two.

A few weeks ago Lukas and I brought home the cutest puppy ever.  No joke.  Cutest.  I figured it was time to do a little update.  Not gonna lie it's really hard not to write a post a week and tell you what Sully is up to.  That would get a little out of hand!

Sully is now nine ish weeks (born March 27th) and weighs a whopping 14 lbs.  When we took him home he was eight so now he seems huge!  The best part is definitely the cuddles and how excited he is when one of us gets home.  The worst part has to be the house training.  Why do they pee so much!!!

We also have to work on his car behaviour.  But how can you not think that is adorable!

In all honestly we have lucked out so far.  He is sleeping through the night, not really chewing except that he will try to get a hold of your fingers.  He's being great for staying in the yard and has learned to sit!  One trick is better than none so I'm happy with it.

By far his favourite dog to play with has to be this guy.  My parents dog is the laziest, biggest (107 lbs!) and Sully basically climbs on him, rolls off, or just runs around and barks!

Happy June.

Last year I blogged every day in June. I even made a cute little picture to go with every post.

you're meaghan me crazy

And this year I plan to do the same thing! I feel like June is a month of new. Everyone and their dog are doing one month challenges, people are getting out more, trying new things just generally being happy. So I have decided that this June for me is going to be all about being happy. I'm going to do anything and everything I can to just be happier!

With that being said, blogging, bloggers and the blogging community used to make me so happy and it's about time I got back into it.

I write this short little post from the comfort of my bed because well, bed makes me happy and I'm one tired girl. Make sure to come back tomorrow and the next day and the next day because I am so pumped to get back into this and start interacting with all you crazy internet people again!

xoxo, meg

introducing....

I am so so excited to introduce to you the newest love of my life, Sully!

I have been begging Lukas for a dog for what seems like forever and we finally decided to get one.  Turns out we got the cutest one ever!

I'm trying really hard not to be a crazy lady and upload 17 billion pictures to facebook so I am keeping them to my instagram and snapchat.  Make sure you follow me if you want to see more pictures of Sully :)

And don't worry, him and Smudge are getting along great!

ps.  School is over until September so I will be back with more soon!

if you don't like something, don't eat it

that might be one of the most obvious things to say to someone, but when it comes to healthy eating sometimes it can be hard to stick to.  I have tried to follow meal plans before but I usually end up choking down gross food for a day than drowning my failures in a chocolate bar.
don't tell me you haven't been there LIAR!

this week I started a 5 day meal plan with Pam and am so surprised at how well I am following it!  I am all for trying new food, not too crazy new, but new nonetheless.  I went into this meal plan with the attitude that if I didn't like it, I wasn't going to eat it.  for some reason I am so surprised at how well I am sticking to it!  who would have thought eating delicious food you looked forward to having would be this easy...

if you're thinking about following a new meal plan, DO IT!  the people who create 90% of them actually know what they are talking about!  but remember, every meal plan is not set in stone.  if you don't like something, tweak it.  I love fish.  it's delicious.  however I don't like fish without it being covered in tartar sauce.  so when one of her meals called for fish, I compromised and added a tiny bit of tartar sauce.  guess what?  I still feel great from eating awesome food, and Pam hasn't kicked me off planet earth because I didn't follow it exactly.  win-win folks.

another thing.  no one expects you to change your life in one day.  and let's be honest, the food we eat is pretty much our whole lives.  this meal plan calls for cutting out coffee.  let's just say no one within a 5 miles radius of me wants that to happen.  so instead of my four cups a day (each with one milk, two sugar) I'm having 2-3 cups and cutting both the milk and sugar in half.  again, my coworkers don't want to kill me and I don't want to kill them!

so let's all take a collective sigh of relief and realize that just because something has 18 super foods jammed into one disgusting thing, it's okay not to eat it.  there's too other many healthy and delicious options to.

work it.

I did something a little crazy and purchased this.

I know it seems really gimmicky and all that but I really need something to kick myself in the ass and get going.  I'm in a wedding this summer and let's be honest, a bridesmaid wants to look hot!!

myself and my two sisters are going to be doing it and decided we are going to document it on here to keep ourselves accountable!  we're even going to show you that dreaded before picture which will just make us work harder to get a smokin' after pic!

if you're interested in something like this let me know and we can do it together!  I find when I work out with other people it is so much harder to quit.  I purposely used to sync my RunKeeper with twitter because of all the amazing encouragement I would get after each run.  documenting something publicly is super hard to do (and sometimes embarrassing) but it's totally worth it.  I purposely don't watch any of my own YouTube videos because I know I look like a total dink.  but hey, it made me complete my first 5k!

also, if you do purchase this from the beachbody website, put Pam MacDonald as your coach, and check out her facebook.  she's pretty kick ass and super helpful!

daily buzz

hello friends!  I have a slight Buzzfeed addiction and have to allow myself a few study breaks to watch a video or two.  I figured I should share my daily favourite with you!

I know you all can relate...

motivation station

anyone out there happen to know where I could find one of those?  a motivation station I mean.  I am seriously lacking in that department.  my entire life my teachers told me I could have awesome grades if I just 'applied' myself.  fuck I used to hate that word.

I'm pretty sure they nailed it on the head though.

no one told me this whole going back to school practically full time (15+ hours/week) while still working a full time job would be this hard!  well maybe they did.. why did I ignore them all! I just find it so hard to actually physically open my book or start one of the videos (my courses are all online) or start a problem.

I'll get my comfy clothes on, fresh water and perhaps a snack beside me, get settled at my new desk (thanks Luke!) turn on my computer to study and BAM three hours later I'm lost in reddit land or buzzfeed.

this right here, what I'm doing, typing up this meaningless post, this is me not studying...

okay I will stop procrastinating and try to get an hour in before bed.

if you have any tips or tricks to getting back into the study groove please let me know!
