diy: tie dye

I've been wanting to tie dye something for awhile now so last night I finally went to the store and bought some!

I couldn't be happier with what I ended up with!

I started with a clean white tank top that was getting a little shabby looking.  Pinched the center and started twisting.

Next, you grab some elastics and wrap them around to create wedges.  This is the guideline for where the color goes.

Then prepare the dye!  I used Tintex only because I'm from a small town and it was my only option.  I really don't know what else is out there but it worked really well!

I filled 6 baby food bottles with the hot water and sprinkled some powder in.  I made one red, blue, yellow, and pink.  Then I mixed blue and red to get purple and yellow and red to get some orange.

shake!
Since I didn't want a mess, I made this makeshift dish out of tin foil to catch any excess dye.  Then I started pouring different colors.  I tried to keep the darks and lights mixed up a bit.

I wrapped them in saran wrap and left them for about an hour (enough time to grab dinner).  Then I rinsed them in cold water and just kept sqeezing them gently until the water was pretty much clear.  Then I threw them in the washer one at a time and hung to dry and voila, they were done!

fruit flies, i hate you

I've never had fruit flies before but lo and behold I got lucky this year!

The bf likes to have friends over and those friends like to drink beer from cans and they don't always get rinsed before being thrown in the recycle bin.

Looking for the best way to get rid of these buggers?  Look in your cupboard!

Take some vinegar and dish soap, swish is around in a mason jar or mix it until it's super foamy then simply pour it in a bowl!  One hour later and this is what I got...

It's disgusting after but it works!

Also, vinegar helps to deodorize so now my kitchen smells great!

Let me know if this works for you!

blog crazy

I think the hardest part about a blog is the creating part.  I keep editing, changing, rearranging every single part about this place and I keep forgetting that one of the most important things is the content!

It doesn't matter how beautiful it is, it has to have something interesting to read (contrary to this post...).

I've decided to take a break from the editing and just write.

I'm an extremely creative person.  However, my ideas are few and far between.  And right now I'm living in a house that I only plan to be here for a few months and haven't really had the time or the energy to unpack and organize all my supplies.

This is what my craft room looked like during the school year when I lived in my apartment.  I got the metal rack from Walmart for about $80 a few years ago and then picked up 6 white tubs from the dollar store for $2 each.  I normally wouldn't spend that much just to hold my crafts but the rack was a gift.

I now HATE these tubs!!  They are just way too big and everything gets lost in the bottom of them.  If you head over to Karen's blog about her craft room you will see my dream room!

One of the things I love about hers and wish I had done was get a bunch of small tubs instead of a few large ones.

Also check out this magnetic board.  Definitely on my to do list!
